If you're a watcher of Real Housewives of New York City, I know what you've been thinking this season: The new girl (model Kristen Taekman) has the. best. haircut. ever. Yes, there are other things to love about her ( water fight with Ramona!), but that versatile, sexy long bob tops the list. So in true fangirl fashion, I got in touch with Kristen, and unsurprisingly, she was so cool about sharing her super-specific hair details-including the fact that she still uses the deep-conditioner we all swore by in sixth grade. Read on!
Lipstick: A bunch of us at Glamour are obsessed with your haircut on RHONY. How long have you had a bob? What was your inspiration behind the cut?Kristen Taekman: Thanks! I've had my bob for about four years. I had long hair forever and decided that when my son was one, it was time for a change. It started out as a LOB, or long bob, and has since morphed into what it is today. [The celebrity haircut inspiration photos Kristen took to the salon were of Gwyneth Paltrow circa her long bob.]
Lipstick: Who's your stylist? Any tips on what our readers would ask for at a salon if they want to copy your cut?K.T.: Jeff Chastain and I have been 'hair dating' for about three years now. He has his own salon on 17th street here in NYC, The Jeff Chastain Parlour. I consider his salon my second home at this point. He is the best! I would ask for a bob that nearly touches the collarbone in the front and is slightly shorter in the back, by about an inch. Then add light layering on top to add a little movement, and it will show off waves more when curled.Lipstick: How often do you cut your hair?K.T.: I cut my hair every three weeks for a bangs trim and then every six weeks for a big cut. You will notice the length tends to vary, and you have to be consistent with your trims when your hair is short.
Lipstick: What's your everyday hair styling routine like? How about when you wear your bob straight vs. wavy? (And which way is your favorite?)K.T.: My everyday routine is wash and go if I don't have anything going on other than being Mommy. I have super-straight hair, so I naturally LOVE when it's curly. Curly is my favorite because it's not the norm. If I have to do my own hair for a night out or an event, I will curl it.
Lipstick: How often do you get blowouts at a salon? As a busy mom, do you have tricks for making a blowout last?K.T.: I very rarely blowdry my own hair these days, especially when I have anything special happening. I have a Drybar addiction. It started when I was pregnant with my daughter. It was easier to have someone else do it for me. It looks so much better and gives you this great confidence. Ditch the lattes, ladies, and put that money into a blow out! Believe it or not, it's not that expensive-it's about $40. When you are a busy mom, it's worth it. I can sometimes have a great blowout last a week. I have them put in a heat protector and something for volume. After about day three or four, the dry shampoo comes out. Then towards the end of the week, it's a ponytail. As for products, I'm really a drugstore kind of girl when it comes to hair. Garnier and Psssst Dry Shampoo are cheap and amazing. And don't laugh, I still use V05 Hot Oil Treatment.
Lipstick: How about your hair color-who does it? Any tips on what our readers should ask for at a salon if they want similar color?K.T.: Jessie Riley is amazing! The best way to explain my color is: woven foil highlights, processed and rinsed, and a base brightening toner. Process for 10 minutes on the regrowth only. Natural pearl blond. The color of champagne. [Love this!]Lipstick: OK, we have to ask this too: Is it weird seeing yourself on TV all the time now? Do you love your hair when you see it on TV, or has being a Real Housewife made you crave changes?K.T.: I have to say, I thought it would be weird to see myself on TV, but it hasn't been. It's kind of fun. And rather than beating myself up, like many of us women do when it comes to appearance, I actually notice traits I like about myself. I like seeing the back of my hair, because I am always looking at the front view. The color pops and the layers move really well. I think my cut is here to stay. You will see towards the end of the season, I start to change things up. I start playing around with cool, different hairstyles and extensions. [YES, can't wait for this.]Lipstick: Do any other Real Housewives have hair that YOU are obsessed with, and why? (From any of the locations, not necessarily NYC!)K.T.: Hmmmmm, other Housewives hair that I like and why? No, I can't say that I am into anyone else's hair. Don't get me wrong, I really think they are all beautiful but I feel that most of the other women have extensions, don't they? [Uh oh, I hope this comment doesn't come up at the reunion show!] Drugstore hair products, blowout rationalizations involving expensive lattes, Gwyneth lob inspiration photos-this interview has only further convinced me that Kristen and I should probably be best friends, and that she's my second-fave Housewife to Yolanda. (If you love Kristen too, you can get to know her more on her brand-new beauty/style blog, Last Night's Look.) Meanwhile, if you haven't seen her hair in action on the show, you really should tune in, because these still pics don't really do it justice. It has so much movement!
